"Afternoon at Hope Street Cafe" by Natasha Smiljanic

A Celebration in Pictures

Toronto – It was a quintessential Village event.  On May 26th, the Forest Hill Village BIA capped its first annual photography contest, in conjunction with the Contact Toronto Photography Festival, with a lavish gala for its honourees at local hotspot Sotto in the Village.  The public event, which saw local residents intermingle as they noshed on lamb shanks and wasabi tuna, celebrated the achievements of some of Toronto’s finest amateur photographers.

After receiving over 100 submissions, the judging panel, which consisted of current BIA board members, selected three grand prize winning photographs and six honourable mentions which best captured this year’s Contact theme “of memory and history”.  The winning photographs were “Afternoon at Hope Street Café” by Natasha Smiljanic; “History Reflected” by Steven Conway; and “Lazy Stroll” by Sasha Bridger. Each grand prize winner will receive a $250 cheque and have their artwork showcased at one of Forest Hill Village’s three prestigious art galleries, Art Interiors, Leonardo Galleries, and Lonsdale Gallery.  The six honourable mention photographs – “Afternoon Conversation” by Nancy Das Neves; “Corner” by Alex Harrison; “History Revisited” by Steven Conway; “Kitchen Table” by Anthony George”; “Sashia at Lonsdale Gallery” by Michael Berger; and “The First Date” by Natasha Smiljanic – will be displayed in local businesses around the Village. “This is a wonderful community event”, says BIA coordinator Emily Nicholson.  “We received entries from photography club members, OCAD students, local high school students, former residents… it was such a fantastic mish-mash of people who had strong connections to Forest Hill Village”.

Ms. Nicholson says the BIA was encouraged by the number of participants for the first ever photography contest and the support shown by merchants in the community, particularly Motophoto, who donated the prints for the contest and gala.

“We expect this to be even bigger and better next year,” says Nicholson.

The Forest Hill Village BIA would like to thank those that participated in its first annual photography contest in conjunction with the Contact Toronto Photography Festival.
