Feature of the Month – September 2007

Nothing like a neighbourhood picnic to bid
farewell to summer and welcome the new school year! The annual
Temmy Latner Forest Hill Jewish Centre’s “Picnic
in the Park” in Suydam Park (Spadina and Strathearn
Roads) is a fun-filled event for friends and neighbours to
re-connect after a long summer.
Running from 11am-3pm on Sunday, September
9th, the picnic will feature tons of activities for the kids,
including a bouncy castle with basketball nets (sponsored
by HSBC), face painting (sponsored by HSBC Private Client
Banking), mini-golf, safety darts and other carnival and sports-themed
activities. Kids and adults alike can also look forward to
a martial arts performance by the Fang Shen Do Kung Fu School
on its mainstage, Toronto Police, EMS and Fire Department
vehicles on site to promote safety awareness, and a full-piece
band entertaining the crowds throughout the day.
Of course, the Jewish Centre’s annual
picnic wouldn’t be complete without its traditional
barbecue, and this year promises lots of tasty treats. Steak
sandwiches, hot dogs, veggie dogs, corn, and cotton candy
(all strictly kosher) are all part of the offering on the
day of the event.
In addition, each year “Picnic in
the Park” holds a raffle to win some fabulous prizes,
most of which are donated by local shops in Forest Hill Village.
This year, there are almost 30 prizes to be won by lucky attendees.
Naturally, such generosity of spirit is
a reflection of the Temmy Latner Forest Hill Jewish Centre’s
high regard in our Village. Since being established in 2000,
it has been a warm and inviting place to go to synagogue,
attend events and meet people. The picnic – which started
in 2001 as a way to promote the Centre and show its appreciation
to the community – is a reflection of the fun, family-friendly
atmosphere inherent at the Centre.
Look no further than the very funny video
on the Centre’s website (www.foresthilljewishcentre.com
or link directly at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnFs9so-VXI)
to see the delightful Rabbi Elie Karfunkel tour the city and
ask playfully, “Who has had a greater impact on your
life – Gandhi or Rabbi Karfunkel?” Surely, Rabbi,
you’re just being modest.
If you’re looking for something for
the whole family, come down to Suydam Park on Sunday afternoon
for the Temmy Latner Forest Hill Jewish Centre’s “Picnic
in the Park”. You won’t want to miss it!
